So, Hillary Clinton raised about $10 million dollars from 60,000+ donors in the 24 hours after the polls closed in PA. Even in the obscene arithmetic of this primary, that's some of the craziest money-raisin' yet. What I kinda like about it is that as much as the polling goes up and down, voters overall don't seem to be swayed by spin and pundits: they're just voting for who they want to vote for, and giving money to whom they want to give money to, right up until the end. Democracy's messy and screwy, and costs way too much money, but I think it's rather pretty.

Meanwhile, 3trillion.org lets you decide how you'd spend the 3 trillion dollars + that the Iraq occupation is going to cost. Kinda fun.

Where is everybody? For God's sakes.

It's been about two weeks since President Bush confirmed that a handful of top advisors, including himself, choreographed the use of "enhanced interrogation techniques" (aka, tactics that are defined as torture under U.S. and International law, but that the Bush administration have decided aren't) on nonconvicted, non-legally represented prisoners in U.S. custody. Two weeks. The White House press secretary received her first question about it today.  Just guess who asked?

¶ In the first sign that the global grain shortage is going to hit home, both Sam's Club and Costco are placing limits on the amount of rice that customers in the bulk market can buy, the first time they've ever put that kind of restriction in place. We're not paying much attention to this right now, but I suspect we will be before much longer.

OK, the Abercrombie and Fitch contingent behind him? The guy in green? Don't watch Obama...the show behind him is much better. It's much better on TV, where you can really see all the weird faces that he's making, and the fact that he's never looking at anything specific, least of all the speaker. I think he should be the campaign's new mascot.

There's a guy with boxing gloves behing Hillary, if you enjoy that sort of thing. Clinton may have won Pennsylvania, but in the "weird guy in the crowd race," Obama walks away with it.

PA results: Tonight, starting at 8 e.t.

I'll be back at 8 or so with results from tonight's PA primary. At the moment, some exit polls of some kind on the "never too worried about details" Drudge Report have Clinton up by 5-ish, as of 5 o'clock. If that's accurate, it may turn into a relatively good night for her: her base tend to be blue-collar workers who aren't going to vote until after work. If that number holds, it's probably not nearly enough of a victory to turn Obama's boat around. CNN is releasing specific voter info, without doing overall percentages.

10:34pm - Going to bed. Looks like an 8-10 point margin right now, with about 70% in. Not a knock-out, but not bad. The demographics were pretty bad for Obama: he basically lost every group, except for African-Americans who chose him overwhelmingly.

8:55pm - Most of the networks are calling PA for Clinton. I'm looking at the stuff coming in from various counties, and I have no idea what kind of margin it'll turn into. Obama's doing poorly (as in, not winning by nearly enough) around Philly, which is not great for him.

8:45pm- Very few solid numbers. Clinton's doing surprisingly well around Philly, but that may or may not hold. I got bored with the coverage, and now I'm watching a documentary about Edith Wharton. And eating a freezy pop.

8:22pm - Weird, but still no actual numbers. There's apparently been huge turnout...MSNBC is saying 52%, which equals a couple of million people. Those kind of numbers could make a huge difference in the poular vote if there's a wide enough gap between the two. On CNN right now, by the way, people are sitting around yelling at each other because, rather than genuine journalists, they try for balance by getting equal numbers of fierce supporters of each candidate. Silliness.

8:10 pm - Nothing in yet. The exit polls show a mixed picture, with new Democrats voting for Obama, late deciders voting for Clinton. It's sounding like it's not going to be a blow-out for Hillary, but it would still be a huge surprise if she loses.

8pm - Polls are closed. Projection coming soon?

D-Day in PA.

OK, so I know it's Earth Day, and there's stuff to talk about that's way more important than any of this primary business (except that, of course, the next president of the most industrialized country on the planet will have mucho impact ont the future of mankind's fate on Planet Earth).

Nevertheless, here's what's going on now in Pennsylvania: voting is going on as we type, and there's cautious optimism among the Clinton peeps. All of the late polls have shown movement in her direction, and a 10 point+ win wouldn't be that surprising. There are still a lot of undecideds, though, and the trend in previous states of huge, record Democratic registrations has continued here. Lots of wildcards, and I haven't heard anything about turnout yet. In previous states, undecided voters have gone Hillary's way, but that seemed to be based on uncertainty about Obama. Are people still uncertain, or have they seen plenty? Another fun one, nonetheless.

By the way, an Earth Day pet peeve: we should probably stop talking about saving the planet. The planet will be just fine. It's our ability to actually live on the thing that's endangered. The end. Love, Ross.

Who the hell is Barrick Obama?

Tomorrow's the PA Democratic primary, the new most important state in the campaign. Polls are all over the place, and the candidates are approximtely tied nationally. Still, the state looks very good for Clinton. To make a psychological dent in Obama's lead, she'll really need around a (very possible) ten-point margin. Much less than that, and it'll be hard for her to continue. Much more, and things might turn around.

If this goes on too long, I do have a new solution to the race: there's a lot of talk about super-delegates making their decisions before the convention in August, why not the credentials committee? That's the 25-member group that will decide whether or not to certify the results from Florida and Michigan. About 1/3 of them have ties to Obama, 1/3 to Clinton, and about another 1/3 have ties to both or neither. If they vote to eject the states from the convention, then Clinton's (most likely) done. If they vote to give them seats, than she (very likely) wins (all depending on the remaining primaries). Wait until the end of the primaries in a month or so, and then get it all done if we're so worried about it...
