¶ Despite having seen many truly extraordinary movies in 2006 (Marie Antoinette, Prairie Home Companion, Thank You for Smoking, The Descent, Superman, Duck Season, Casino Royale), I haven't seen a single thing nominated in major categories. Children of Men and Borat both received adapted screenplay nominations, and Superman Returns and Marie Antoinette got technical/art nominations. And I can certainly root for An Inconvenient Truth in the best documentary category. Maybe I'll just hold my own award gala. We'll call it the Roscars. (tm)
Still, I have about a month to see: Babel, The Departed, Letters from Iwo Jima, Little Miss Sunshine, The Queen, Blood Diamond, Venus, The Last King of Scotland, Dreamgirls, and Volver.
If anyone can just tell me if any of those are good, it would save me a lot of time. I suspect that Babel is overrated, but that's as far as I've gotten.
¶ State of the Union tonight at nine, lest ye forget...
