“I especially apologize to my fans, friends and family in Miami and Chicago. I am committed to examining my feelings and will recognize, appreciate and respect the differences among people in our society. I regret any embarrassment I have caused the league.”
What I think is most interesting about the Tim Hardaway thing is not the statement, but the apology. Damned if we haven't heard a lot of half-assed apologies lately, but this one pretty much takes the cake.
"You know, I hate gay people, so I let it be known. I don’t like gay people and I don’t like to be around gay people. I’m homophobic. I don’t like it. It shouldn’t be in the world or in the United States.”
His original statement is at least honest. Now, he has been kept from the All-Star Games this weekend by the league, so he's got a real self-interest in apologizing. We've come to a rather silly place, though, when someone makes a clear, obvious, straightforward statement of bigoted principle, and then goes "Uh, Sorry." when his self-interest comes into play. Tim Hardaway is clearly an asshole, and I'm frankly glad that he's open about it. I hope that all the assholes of the world will make their asshole positions known, and keep their asshole apologies to themselves. Hardaway still hates gays, he still wants them fired from their NBA jobs, and still wants us...out of the world, I guess (which I'll try not to take as a threat). Can anyone even tell me what he's apologizing for?
